ANZAC Writing Competition
On Tuesday last week we had a visit from MP Michael MCormack, Federal Member for Riverina, who came to school to present a prize in his 12th annual ANZAC writing competition.
Mr McCormack talked to our students explaining that more than 700 entries were received for this year’s competition, showcasing an amazing array of writing talent across the Riverina and Central West, with entries this year as good as any from previous years. He also mentioned this writing competition was started as a way to help younger generations appreciate the service and sacrifice of our soldiers during a time of great turmoil in the world.
He credited the students and teachers for their hard work, noting that writing is required for every part of your life and is a very important skill.
St Mary's is very happy to say that Finn Brown was the proud and deserved winner in the primary section of the competition. You will find Finn's entry in Mr McCormack's published booklet "ANZAC Day in the Riverina and Central West".
Well done Finn.
MacKillop Rugby League
On Friday the 6th of May Bobby Bryant, Jagger Lange, Nixon Loudon and Eddie Tulloch took a trip to Canberra to trial for the MacKillop Rugby League team.
The boys had an awesome day, competing against some excellent players from other schools.
Congratulations to Nixon who was selected for the MacKillop team. An amazing achievement and one Nixon has worked very hard toward. Nixon will play with the MacKillop team on Tuesday 7 - Thursday 9 June, 2022 at Parkes.
Well done Nixon.
Canberra Goulburn Cross Country
On Monday the 9th of May Canberra Goulburn held its cross country at Stromlo in the ACT.
Three of our long distance runners, Bobby Bryant, Max Cuthbertson and Billy Pettit, took to the steep hills of the Stromlo course to see if they could qualify for MacKillop Cross Country.
While the boys didn't qualify for the MacKillop trials they all ran extremely well and finished in the top half of the field. Max narrowly missed qualifying by the smallest of margins.

Happy Birthday to
Charlotte Carne and Karlani Caygill
who celebrate their birthdays next week.
We hope you enjoy you special day.
We all remember the devastating impact of the floods in the Lismore region earlier this year.
As a way to support Catholic schools in the Lismore diocese St Mary's are running a Book Club Fundraiser.
Simply order a book for the fundraiser as part of your Book Club order and let your class teacher know which book/s is for donation. When the orders arrive we will compile the donations and organise shipping to Lismore to restore books in their school libraries.
Please contact the office if you would like another book club brochure.
As a bonus part of this fundraiser, the points generated by the book you purchase will go to a fund that supports your child’s class to purchase new books.
Your support will be invaluable!
Students in Years 3 & 5 will sit the NAPLAN tests over the next two weeks:
- Tuesday 10th May - Writing
- Wednesday 11th of May - Conventions of Language
- Thursday the 12th May - Reading
- Tuesday 17th May - Numeracy
On each test day the Year 5 test will start at 9am and the Year 3 test will start at 11.30am. Any child who is away on the days above will be caught up on the next available test session.
Children are ready for these tests and the best preparation for them is plenty of sleep and to remain calm.
Please click on the link below to see more information for parents on the NAPLAN testing.
School Counsellor Visit - Via Zoom
Mrs Donna Spillman, our school counsellor for this year, is continuing to meet with students via Zoom every Wednesday.
Please follow this link for detailed information on the service provided to our families by Catholic Care.
If you would like to make a confidential appointment for your child please contact the school office if your child is already registered. If you wish to register your child to see the counsellor please contact Mr Nielsen first and then an complete online form at this link:

Fee statements for Term 2 have been posted.
Thank you to those families who have payment plans in place.
Please call the school office if you would like to change a payment plan setup by the school.
The school has the ability to provide school fee support for families in genuine need. School fee payment records are strictly confidential and access is restricted to office staff and the school principal. Please contact Mr Nielsen if you wish to discuss this matter or any other issue.
Your child will received the St Mary's School ICT & iPad Student User Agreement on Tuesday.
The content of this document is of high importance. Parents and students need to engage with the document and discuss key points before signing. Please take particular notice of the social media requirements of the document and be aware most social media applications require a minimum age of 13. The signed agreement is due back to school before Friday the 13th of May.
Students who have not returned the form by the due date will not be permitted to use an iPad at school.
The school strongly advises that parents of primary school children need to have a healthy presence is their child's internet activity.
Please remember it is a requirement of the Catholic Education Office and Education Department that student absences from school form part of a child's official school record.
Parents are asked to send an absence note via the Compass within five days of an absence. The absence followups are done weekly on a Monday so it is helpful if absence notes for each week are sent to the office by Friday of that week.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Of particular concern at the moment is tracksuit pants for sports day. These should be plain navy without any logos, writing or stripes. The pants should not be fleece but a smooth nylon and are available from Wendy's Embroidery, who stock two options to purchase.
Sports socks should be white, sports socks with logos or other colours are not acceptable.
Please refer to our school handbook, which is on the website, for more uniform information.
- Pickup from the lawn area at 3.20pm - To ensure students are safe leaving the school grounds, parents are asked to come onto the grounds and walk out with their children. Teachers will allow students to leave once they see parents near the lawn.
- Pickup from the lawn area at 3.20pm when raining - the verandah next to the new staffroom will be used as the pickup point. The children will wait with the teacher on duty until parents come to the verandah to collect them.
- Dropoff and pickup near the bus stop - please do not drop off or pick your children at the front door of the school or at the school bus stop during the morning or afternoon bus times. It is very dangerous to stop in the path of the buses or cross in front of the school buses.
- Pickup during school hours - If you want to come and pickup your child during the day please call the office, who will arrange for your child to come to the office for collection so they can be signed out.
Canteen Price Rises
We have all felt the impact of rising prices at the register in the supermarket and unfortunately our Canteen is no different. Due to price increases on a number of the products we sell in the canteen, the P & F has had to pass these rises to our families.
Over the coming weeks you may notice a few changes in the canteen menu. Product brands may change, and some items may have a small price rise.
It is a regretful but necessary action, and we look forward to your continuing support of this service.

Mother's Day Mass
This request was forwarded to us by the Archbishop's office, if anyone in our community offer assistance please email Cat direct.
Catalina is a 24 year old woman from Canberra seeking short or long term accommodation from Tuesday 24th May when she begins working as a paramedic at the West Wyalong Ambulance Station. Would you have a granny flat to rent out or a spare room she could board in?
Cat says “I work long hours and will be spending most of my days off in Canberra, so I will not be around too much. And when I am home I’m quiet and neat. I’m also a practicing Catholic Christian and can provide character and professional references if required. Please contact me via phone or email for more details. 0478 648 949 or catalina.ringrose.voase@gmail.com”.
