Dear Parents and Carers,
Over the last week you may have heard of a few new words coming home from St Mary’s. Words like compassionate, respectful, courageous, resilient and committed. You may have also heard of a 'St Mary’s call out'. All of these are associated with our new Vision and Mission statements.
A team of teachers and parents from the board, came together to review our previous statements and make appropriate changes that represent the schools current climate. Phil Billington, a Catholic leader across 5 dioceses and 4 states since 1972, lead the group in a series of activities to unpack where St Mary’s is now and where St Mary’s strives to be in the future.
It is with great excitement that I unveil St Mary’s Vision and Mission statements for 2021 and beyond.
VISION
St Mary’s War Memorial School is a vibrant and inclusive Catholic School community, inspiring minds, enriching hearts and celebrating achievements.
MISSION
In partnership with families, we are committed to educating children who are:
- Compassionate
Loving one another as Jesus showed us.
- Respectful
Christian stewards with an understanding and appreciation of earth, themselves, culture and social diversity.
- Courageous
Authentic and spirited in their faith, learning and actions.
- Resilient
Adaptable, engaged and confident in their learning and interactions with each other.
- Committed
Creative problem solvers who collaborate with others to become responsible learners.
During last week’s Making Jesus Real (MJR) session I launched our Mission and Vision statements with the students. With the entire school in attendance, I introduced the statements and explored what they mean for us. During the next 5 weeks our MJR sessions will take one statement and unpack it further as the students break into their smaller MJR groups.
Phil Nielsen
Principal
There is a wonderful line from the musical, Les Miserables, when the hero, Valjean, is told, ‘To love another person is to see the face of God.’ As Christian people, we believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God.
To look upon another person with love and compassion is to see the face of God revealed.
When we are called to love, we are called to recognise that every single person is worthy of love and every single person is made in the image of God – even ourselves!

All three students played very well in the first trial games and were chosen in the possibles and probables, which is a feat in itself. All three impressed with their skills during the playoffs for a spot in the Canberra Goulburn team and they have all qualified to play for Canberra Goulburn in the MacKillop trials on Friday 28th of May.

Mother's Day Celebrations
Last Thursday we had a wonderful Mother's Day Mass followed by morning tea. We would like to thank Mrs Nielsen and Mrs Daniher for organising this fabulous morning, the Mass was beautiful and the morning tea was very special and beautifully presented.
Our Mother's Day Stall was held on Friday morning and our P&F team of La'shey Cattle, Mickayla Sams, Brodie Greenwood, Stacey Smith, Tiarna Fair and Kristen Northfield did a great job of setting up and manning the stall. Our school and mothers are very lucky to have a P&F who organise this stall.
Fundraising - Year 5/6 Faith Recycling
5/6 Faith spent an afternoon sorting and organising the recylcing for delivery to the collection centre. Thank you to Mr Tony Glasgow for dropping the bags and collecting the money.
The sorting it quite a messy job but the money earned is then spent on items for the school or is donated to a charity, and our Year 6 student leaders are entrusted to make this choice. It is a good experience for our older students to participate in recycling and making choices on where fund raising is directed.

Anxiety has become one of the leading causes of ill-health in our children and it’s also affecting more parents than ever before. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated what was already an accelerating problem.
Can we stop anxiety? Where is it coming from? Are our kids' bubble-wrapped snowflakes that just need to toughen up and get over it? Or is there an approach to our children’s anxiety that can build them, encourage them, and give them hope?
This webinar will provide the answers every parent needs to help their children – and even to help themselves.
Over the course of an hour, Dr Justin Coulson will help you to:
- Recognise anxiety in your child
- Know how best to respond when anxiety flares up
- Become a supportive hope-giver to your child to empower him/her to be courageous in the face of anxious thoughts
- Uncover the research-based #1 strength your child can develop to combat anxiety and develop remarkable resilience.
- Identify how your own anxieties could be affecting your child, and know how to manage them
- Learn proven strategies to help both you and your child navigate and manage anxiety when things get stressful
Once you’ve participated in this webinar, you’ll have strategies that you can put into practice on the spot to help curb anxiety, build confidence, and restore resilience in your child. And if you struggle with anxiety yourself, you’ll be changed.
We hope you will join us on Monday 17 May, 8pm AEST.
